Prince William holds many titles but one of them has quite a tragic history – and his sons Prince George or Prince Louis may one day inherit it.

The royal gained seven new titles when he became the Prince of Wales last year as his father, King Charles ascended to the throne.

But one of William’s titles he’s had since his wedding – the Duke of Cambridge – is filled with sadness and unfortunate events. He is the eighth person to hold the title.

And it is possible one day that William will pass it on to George or Louis.

The first Duke of Cambridge was King Charles II’s eldest nephew, Charles Stuart, who died when he was only six months old.

The next holder, Charles Stuart’s younger brother, James, died at a young age from either smallpox or the bubonic plague.

The King’s oldest nephew followed, Edgar Stuart, but the young Duke of Cambridge died at the age of three.

He died at Richmond Palace on June 8, 1671.
