Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are understood to be dead set on making amends with King Charles and the rest of the Royal Family, and the reason may have something to do with the 2024 US elections.
The Duke of Sussex’s attempts to reach out to his father, who continues to undergo treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, and public comments to the press about his love for his family, firmly suggest this.
“It seems quite clear that they are desperate to start healing the rift,” an ex-employee told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden.
In an op-ed for the paper, he appears to suggest that his motive may be due to the ongoing threats from Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump and his family.
It comes after Trump’s son, Eric, called the Duke and Duchess “spoiled apples” and reiterated his father’s claims that Harry could be deported if the Republicans win in November.
“You can happily have those two,” Eric said. “We might not want them any more; it feels like they’re on an island of their own.”
He added: “You can always have bad actors in everything. You can have spoiled apples in every orchard.
“The institution of the Royal Family is beautiful and is admired by many Americans. That should be protected.”
Earlier this year, the former US president hinted that he could deport Prince Harry should he return to the White House.
Donald Trump said that Harry could be deported from the US if he lied about taking drugs on his American visa application, as a court case on the matter continues to rumble on.
The Republican nominee said the Duke would not receive any special treatment because of his royal background.
Harry’s visa status has come under intense scrutiny after American conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation, last year sued the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for access to his immigration records.
They want to know whether Harry declared whether he has ever used recreational drugs on the form – following his admissions in his memoir, Spare, where he detailed extensive use of cocaine, marijuana and magic mushrooms.
The US Government has so far refused to release his records.
Harry has sought to make amends with his father this year, following his shock cancer diagnosis was made public. Just hours after Buckingham Palace announced the news, Harry rushed over to the UK to see his father. The pair met for a brief chat which was said to be a positive step towards fixing their relationship.
Not long afterwards, the Duke of Sussex said in a TV interview: “Throughout all these families I see it on a day-to-day basis, the strength of the family unit coming together. I think any illness, any sickness brings families together.”
He also publicly declared that he loved his family.
It comes after People magazine reported that the King is refusing to take calls from his youngest son.
“He gets ‘unavailable right now,'” a friend of Harry’s told the publication. “His calls go unanswered. He has tried to reach out about the King’s health, but those calls go unanswered too.”
