After a health scare earlier in January, Queen Sonja is already back enjoying Norway’s winter weather with a visit to a stunning but fleeting cathedral.

Queen Sonja has visited Hunderfossen Family Park to see this year’s new attraction there. Each year, a newly-designed cathedral made of ice is built in the park with a different theme.

The 2025 theme for the park is Peace and Reconciliation. Ice artist Elisabeth Kristensen has worked with her team to create this year’s cathedral, using over twenty tonnes of ice and 15,000 cubic metres of snow.

In addition to visiting the cathedral, Queen Sonja was able to see a performance and visit different exhibitions around the park.

It came just a few weeks after Queen Sonja was admitted to hospital with an irregular heartbeat. After medical tests, she had a pacemaker fitted.

The Norwegian queen has had a busy week, as she also opened a new exhibition at the Queen Sonja Art Stable.

At the King’s Table explores the history of royal dining and table setting. The exhibition includes both contemporary and historic pieces.

There is a Porcelain Room included in the exhibition that features hundreds of pieces of blue and white ceramic dishes that belong to the 4,000 piece royal collection.

Queen Sonja was joined by Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Astrid for the opening. The exhibition runs until December 2025.
