King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands hosted French President Emmanuel Macron, and his wife, Brigitte Macron, for a State Visit.

On Wednesday, 12 April, The Queen visited a famous Amsterdam landmark with the French First Lady. 

Queen Máxima and Brigitte Macron visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. 

Anne and her family lived in a secret annexe of the house from 1942 to 1944. The Gestapo then discovered them. The family was sent to three different concentration camps. Anne, her sister Margot, and their mother Edith died in concentration camps. However, their father, Otto Frank, survived. Frank published his daughter’s wartime diaries which became a best-selling book and created the Anne Frank Museum in the house that they lived in during the war.

The Queen and French First Lady visited the house and spent time with guides learning about the family’s history. They spent a few moments looking at the bookcase that hid the annexe from the rest of the house and were then able to look at some surviving objects.

The Anne Frank Museum shared on Twitter, “Today, the French First Lady #BrigitteMacron visited the Anne Frank House together with the Dutch Queen #Máxima. ‘Anne definitely touched our hearts,’ she wrote. (Anne a definitivement touche nos coeurs)”

The pair also visited the Keukenhof Garden on Wednesday. While enjoying the gardens, they met with well-wishers.

This is the first French State Visit to the Netherlands in nearly a quarter of a century.

The French President was meant to have hosted King Charles for a State Visit to France at the end of March; however, it had to be postponed due to nationwide protests. Macron’s visit to the Netherlands was not without protest; protestors were at two separate events during this State Visit to the Netherlands.
