Queen Margrethe of Denmark has been discharged from hospital after  she fell at Fredensborg Palace and is now recuperating back home, the royal household announced.

The 84-year-old was admitted to the Danish capital Copenhagen’s university hospital on Wednesday for observation, where her medical team found that she had suffered a neck injury and a fracture in the left hand, according to the latest update.

Margrethe, who abdicated the Danish throne earlier this year, is said to be “in good spirits” and will be recovering at Fredensborg Palace.

Her left hand has been plastered and she will need to wear a neck collar in the coming months.

The royal household’s statement read: “Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was discharged from Rigshospitalet today and is now back in her home at Fredensborg Palace.

“On Wednesday evening, Queen Margrethe was admitted to the hospital after a fall, which unfortunately resulted in an injury concerning the vertebrae of the neck as well as a fracture in the left hand. As a result of the fall, the left hand is now in a plaster cast, and The Queen will need to wear a stiff neck collar in the coming months.

“Queen Margrethe is in good spirits and is doing well under the circumstances but will, however, be in recovery for a longer period of time. This also means that The Queen’s presence at a number of arrangements is cancelled for some time to come.”

Yesterday, Margrethe’s son, King Frederik, told reporters he had spoken to her and that “she is in good hands.”

Frederik said during an event in Copenhagen’s City Hall: “We take it day by day. The doctors are the ones who decide.”

Margrethe was set to attend an engagement today to mark the 75th anniversary of the Department of Archeology at Aarhus University, however, following the latest news, her attendance was cancelled.

Denmark’s longest reigning monarch stepped down back in January after 52 years, handing the throne to her oldest son, Frederik, 55.

Margrethe made clear that her ill health was part of the reason she gave up her responsibilities.
