Queen Camilla’s work to increase awareness of domestic violence was on full show in the documentary, Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors. And the ground breaking programme highlighted just how important the work of Queen Camilla is as she campaigns to end domestic violence.
Her meetings with survivors of domestic violence showed the significance Her Majesty places on their experience and their input in shaping solutions to the abuse that affects tens of thousands of people every day.
Although it is an uncomfortable subject for many, Queen Camilla has spent years publicly discussing the prevalence of domestic violence against women and raising awareness.
In the documentary, viewers follow The Queen over the course of a year as she meets with domestic violence survivors and organisations that help to support them.
Queen Camilla was able to sit down with Natalie, a survivor, who agreed to speak with Her Majesty on a condition of anonymity.
Natalie shared that although her partner was originally charming and romantic, he quickly turned to physical violence. Although the subject matter is difficult, The Queen attentively listened to Natalie’s experiences, and commented that she “is surprised she’s brave enough” to share her difficult story.
Despite its taboo status, domestic violence affects many. Every five days, a woman is killed by her current or former partner, and over 75,000 people in the United Kingdom are in immediate danger of being injured or murdered as a result of domestic violence.
Queen Camilla has been working to highlight the organisations that fight against domestic violence for over a decade now. In 2013, she launched the Wash Bag project that provides toiletries for sexual assault victims to use after their forensic examination. She has also attended numerous panels discussing violence against women and taken part in several public campaigns to raise awareness.
Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors can be seen on the ITV Player in the UK.
