The Queen has met some of the theatre makers of the future and heard about their creative plans.

Queen Camilla visited the Unicorn Theatre in London to see the work of its Creative Hub which nurtures young creative talent.

Her Majesty, who is Royal Patron of the Unicorn, toured its Creative Schools where a workshop for primary school children was taking place. The Queen met pupils from Snowfields Primary who were creating a poem around the theme of sustainability and climate action. Their verse took lost animals of Britain as its theme and it’s hoped it will be used in a future production at the theatre.

Acclaimed author and former Children’s Laureate, Malorie Blackman OBE, led a workshop for 8 to 13 year olds which was visited by The Queen during her time at the Unicorn. The session took in the theatre’s current production of Malorie Blackman’s work Pig Heart Boy and the importance of creativity in childhood

The visit ended with a reception for staff and participants at the theatre who spoke to Queen Camilla about how the theatre’s creative projects help young people learn and develop their own skills further.

Rachel Bagshaw, Artistic Director of the Unicorn, said it was an honour to welcome Queen Camilla to the theatre, and added ”every year, we have the extraordinary privilege to provide thousands of children with their first theatre experiences – encouraging them to question and explore the world through stories, sparking their imaginations and ideas. It is fundamental to us that the work we produce is informed by young people, as they show us the world they want to create.”

The Unicorn is the national theatre for young people in the UK.
