Queen Camilla unveiled a statue of Italian jockey Frankie Dettori as he retired from the sport in Great Britain.

At the Royal Ascot racecourse on Saturday for the QIPCO British Champions Day, the Queen took a moment to recognise one of the greats of the sport. She was accompanied by the Greencoats, which is the ceremonial guard of the Royal Family at Ascot—a position they’ve served in since 1744.

The bronze statue depicts Dettori on a horse and was designed by Tristram Lewis, an artist and sculptor.

At the unveiling, he said, “It’s wonderful to be immortalised at such a great track and to have your own statue while you are still alive, wow.”

He added: “Ascot has been everything to me – my first Group 1 winner when I was 19 – it is where it all started and concludes with nine Gold Cups, seven King Georges, 81 winners at Royal Ascot and hopefully some victories today.”

On his final day at Ascot, Dettori won the Long Distance Cup while riding Trawlerman, then won the Champion Stakes with King of Steel.

Dettori will move to the United States to begin a second career there and will also race in Hong Kong and Australia.

Queen Camilla further cemented the moment by wearing a brooch that belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who was renowned for her love of horseracing.
