The heir to the throne of Spain has sworn allegiance to her country’s constitution in an historic ceremony in Madrid and paid a style nod to her mother as she did it.
Princess Leonor chose a white trouser suits for one of the most important moments of her royal life, an echo of the outfit famously worn by her mother, Letizia, for the formal ceremony that followed her engagement to the then Prince Felipe.
Leonor wore a single breasted white jacket with slightly flared trousers for the ceremony at the Cortes, Spain’s Parliament.
Her style nod to her mother was first noted as she drove to the Cortes in a vintage Rolls Royce, accompanied by her sister, Infanta Sofia.
Queen Letizia chose a teal dress and wore a pair of earrings given to her to mark Leonor’s birth in 2005.
Infanta Sofia was in a blue print dress.
Spain’s Royal Family were greeted by politicians as they arrived before taking their seats for the historic ceremony which saw Leonor promise to abide by the constitution and the country’s laws and swear allegiance to the country’s king, her father, Felipe VI.
The event took place on the day that Leonor de Borbon y Ortiz turned 18, October 31st 2023.
As she has now come of age, Princess Leonor can act as regent should her father require one and she can reign by herself, without a need for a regency of her own.
Following the oath, she was given a long standing ovation.
