The royal, surrounded by excitable youngsters, made an appearance in place of the late Queen, who visited more than 50 times in her 70-year reign.

The Firm have had links to the show since the before the former monarch was made patron of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1952.

Sitting on a blanket, Kate spoke to schoolkids from across London, who tucked into apples and sandwiches for their lunch.

She also shook hands with those queueing to speak to her, and accepted flowers as gifts from others.

The picnic, which is set to become a yearly get-together, was inspired by a conversation Kate had with the RHS in 2019 when she unveiled her Back to Nature Garden.

At the time, the Princess of Wales told how she wanted to encourage the public to get back in touch with nature when she helped co-design a garden

And told organisers she felt it would be nice to involve more youngsters in the event, sources close to the Princess of Wales said.

Kate has carried out multiple royal duties since the King’s coronation at the start of the month.

Last week she wowed on a charity visit to the Anna Freud Centre, which has helped develop an “anxiety toolkit”.

Kate has long been a champion of children’s mental health, and supports programmes including Heads Together, Shout 85258 and Mentally Healthy Schools.

It comes after she chatted with girls from St Katherine’s School at a charity event in Bath on Tuesday and said there is an area of royal life she is “still working out”.

The royal mum-of-three made the rare admission during an event for the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust.

She told the Olympian that public speaking was not her “natural thing” and “not everyone’s perfect”.

After Dame Kelly revealed details from the chat, royal fans have praised Kate, with one saying: “Love how Catherine is honest.”

It follows Kate saying that being a member of the royal family was not something she had expected until she fell in love with Prince William.

And on Saturday, royal photographer Matt Porteous posted a picture of Kate collect honey from a hive as part of World Bee Day.
