Happy Diamond Anniversary to Prince and Princess Hitachi of Japan! The aristocratic Hanako Tsugaru received this striking Mikimoto Pearl and Diamond Tiara when she married Masahito, Prince Hitachi, the younger son of Emperor Hirohito, on this day in 1964, 60 years ago!
Princess Hanako’s Wedding Tiara | Pearl and Diamond Fringe Tiara
When Hanako Tsugaru, daughter of Count Yoshitaka Tsugaru, married Prince Masahito, the younger son of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako, in 1964, the bride wore a new Mikimoto Pearl and Diamond Tiara composed of a Pearl Sunburst in the midst of Diamond Waves, alongside a coordinating Pearl and Diamond Necklace.
Following the Wedding, the Mikimoto Pearl and Diamond Wedding Tiara was Princess Hitachi’s primary jewel alongside her Pearl and Diamond Fringe Tiara, worn for numerous State Banquets including for the British State Visit to Japan in 1975.
Princess Hitachi also wore her Mikimoto Pearl and Diamond Tiara for the Enthronement Banquet of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the Imperial Palace in 1990.
While it has not been worn as much as her Pearl and Diamond Fringe Tiara, Princess Hanako has often worn her Mikimoto Wedding Tiara for the annual New Years Audiences at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on New Years Day.
In recent years, Princess Hitachi wore her Pearl and Diamond Tiara for the Japanese New Year’s Reception at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo in 2019.
A few months later, the Mikimoto Wedding Tiara was worn by Princess Hitachi for the Audiences at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo following the Accession of Emperor Naruhito of Japan, which seems to be the Tiaras last public appearance to date as the Prince and Princess have largely retired from public duties due to age.
