Princess Elizabeth of Greece, Countess of Törring-Jettenbach


Today marks the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Princess Elizabeth of Greece, Countess of Törring-Jettenbach, who was born on this day in 1904! The eldest daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna of Russia, she was the middle sister of Princess Olga of Yugoslavia and Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. Growing up between Greece and Russia, the family resided in exile first in Switzerlands and later in Paris. Nicknamed her ‘Woolly’ because of her thick, dark brown hair, Princess Elizabeth was a keen horsewoman and painter.

Princess Elizabeth was the first cousin of King George II of Greece, Queen Helen of Romania, King Alexander of Greece, King Paul of Greece and Princess Irene, Duchess of Aosta (one-time Queen of Croatia), the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Margarita, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Princess Cecile, Grand Duchess of Hesse, Princess Theodora, Margravine of Baden,  Princess Sophie of Greece and Hanover, Princess Eugenie of Greece, and Prince Michael of Greece.

In 1934, Princess Elizabeth married Count Carl Theodor of Törring-Jettenbach, the son of Count Hans Veit zu Toerring-Jettenbach and Duchess Sophie in Bavaria and the nephew of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium and Crown Princess Marie Gabrielle of Bavaria. The Count and Countess had two children; Count Hans Veit and Countess Helene.

In 1953, Princess Elizabeth was among the Royal Guests invited to the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, briefly being seen on the Balcony of Buckingham Palace. Princess Elizabeth died of cancer in Munich at the age of 50 in 1955.
