Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence has long stood beside the Princess Royal, not only as her husband of over thirty years, but increasingly as a calming presence in her intensely demanding royal schedule.
In 2024, Princess Anne conducted 474 engagements, surpassing any other member of The Royal Family – including The King, who undertook 329. As she approaches her 75th birthday, the princess maintains her busy schedule with characteristic resolve. But concerns have grown among those closest to her about the sustainability of such a workload.
One of the leading voices urging moderation is Sir Tim himself. According to The Sunday Times, he remains quietly vigilant about his wife’s well-being and is said to be a strong advocate for creating space in her schedule for rest and private time.
A source told The Sunday Times that Sir Tim is a “driving force” of support for his wife.
They said: “One of his main concerns has always been that she doesn’t burn herself out.” A former aide recalled diary planning meetings with Princess Anne, claiming she regularly resisted attempts to create space for downtime.
According to GB News, one former aide to Princess Anne recalled how there was a battle between the Princess and her advisers about the need for downtime.
They said: “I’d look at the diary and suggest, ‘Ma’am, you really can’t do another weekend of engagements, it’s your third weekend in a row.’
“However, the Princess Royal’s husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, is said to be keen for his wife to spend some more time relaxing at their Gatcombe Park Estate. “‘Why not?’ she would say. ‘Because I’ll get a rocket from your husband on Monday asking, ‘When are we going to spend some time together?’”
Sir Tim and Anne’s relationship, though rarely in the public spotlight, has always reflected a deep mutual respect. The couple married in 1992 in a private family ceremony at Crathie Kirk, near Balmoral.
Over the decades, Sir Tim has remained a constant, discreet companion – one who understands both the obligations of royal life and the personal cost they can carry.
While the Princess Royal continues to embody a tireless sense of duty, Sir Tim’s influence has grown into a protective force – one that ensures her commitment to public service is matched by moments of respite and personal connection.
