The Princess Royal has visited the hospital where many of those injured when a car was driven into crowds in Liverpool are being treated.
Princess Anne went to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital to thank emergency workers and medical staff who have been looking after those hurt when the vehicle hit pedestrians attending a victory parade for Liverpool FC after they won the Premier League.
A total of forty seven people were injured in the incident in Water Street as football fans celebrated the team’s title and twenty seven of those were taken to hospital.
Liverpool metro mayor, Steve Rotheram, said four of those hurt remained ”very, very ill”. Consultants speaking to the Princess Royal said they expected everyone to recover and added it was ”fortunate” that there were not more major injuries.
Princess Anne headed to the hospital first thing on Tuesday morning – she had been due to be in Liverpool for other engagements but prioritised time with medical staff first to deliver her thanks for their speedy response and to hear how those affected are progressing.
Following her visit, Buckingham Palace issued a statement on behalf of Princess Anne, saying ‘‘The Princess would like to share her heartfelt condolences and support for the families and communities affected. Her Royal Highness also wishes to acknowledge the courage of the emergency services, some of whom she met today, and all those providing care and comfort during this difficult time.’
King Charles and Queen Camilla said they were ‘‘deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the terrible events that took place” in a statement issued from Canada which they are currently visiting.
The King said ”it is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for so many could end in such distressing circumstances. At this heartbreaking time for the people of Liverpool, I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need.”
His Majesty concluded ‘‘our prayers and deepest sympathy are with all those who have been affected, and my special gratitude goes out to the first responders, emergency services personnel and other individuals who rushed to the aid of the injured.”
The Prince and Princess of Wales also thanked first responders in their own statement, saying ”We are deeply saddened by the scenes in Liverpool yesterday. What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy. Our thoughts are with those who were injured and to the first responders and emergency services on the ground. W & C’
