Prince Joachim has undertaken a new role in his defence and diplomatic career, and has spoken about his pride in performing it. 

On 17th March, the Danish Royal Household announced that Queen Margrethe’s second son would be appointed defence industry attaché at the Danish Embassy in Washington DC, where he would also cover Canada. 

About this new role, the Prince said: “I am proud that I will continue to have the opportunity to represent Denmark internationally in the area of security and defence”, adding that “transatlantic cooperation is a high priority area, and I am honoured that they have found me qualified for the task”. 

This sentiment was echoed by the remarks of the Danish Minister of Defence, Troels Lund Poulsen, who said: “The United States is out most important ally and partner. The transatlantic bond is absolutely crucial in the security situation in which we find ourselves. It is our ambition to significantly strengthen the defence industrial cooperation with the Unites States, and Prince Joachim will greatly contribute to this”. 

This new appointment comes as Prince Joachim’s term as military attaché for the Danish Embassy in Paris is set to come to a term this year. 

The Prince will take up his new role in North America from the 1st of September 2023. The role is set to last for 3 years, with the possibility of further extensions. Prince Joachim, along with his wife, Princess Marie, and their children, Henrik and Athena, will move to the US capital in the summer.

This is undoubtedly a moment of pride for the Prince, who will be representing the defence interests of his native Denmark in the world’s largest military power. It is a task that has been made increasingly crucial by the current security situation in Europe, and the subsequent need for better equipment and coordination between the countries of the block of Western allies.
