Royal experts have dashed any hopes of a reconciliation between Prince Harry and King Charles as there is still a major issue lingering – the one of trust. The Duke of Sussex’s relationship with the Royal Family turned sour in 2020, when he ditched the Firm for a new life in the US with his wife, Meghan Markle.
The Sussexes’ various accusations and claims against the royals deepened the ongoing rift even further. But recently the Duke expressed his desire to reconcile with his estranged family – a scenario that has been quickly dismissed by royal watchers, who claimed it would be hard for the King to reach out.
Harry told the BBC last month that his father will not speak to him and he does not know how much longer the King has left.
The prince also expressed hopes of a reconciliation with his family. He said: “Of course, they will never forgive me for lots of things, but there’s no point in continuing to fight anymore. I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious.”
However, royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith claimed that while, there has been a desire to reconnect, the “underlying issue is trust”.
She told People magazine: “The King and William don’t trust Harry and Meghan with any kind of confidential conversation.”
Another author, Valentine Low, said that while Harry’s interview with the BBC wasn’t meant to be an attack on the royals, “it would be seen as one,” adding: “It makes Charles reaching out even harder.”
She added: “There is not a good angel in his ear to say, ‘Be a good dad and make the first move.”
Another royal author, Catherine Mayer, was also pessimistic regarding any royal reconciliation.
She said: “If you have that level of breach in a family, and you are estranged, you run that risk every day of having something unfathomable to deal with.”
