Prince Harry appeared to throw a thinly veiled swipe at Elon Musk during his speech at a panel discussion about online hate during day one of his and Meghan Markle’s tour in Colombia.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the Responsible Digital Future Summit which aimed to bring together a diverse group of thought leaders, experts, activists, and community members who are united by a shared vision of fostering a healthier and more ethical digital landscape.

Harry talked about misinformation on social media and how that can cause unrest and spark a quick reaction, just days after the Southport riots in Britain.

A total of 390 adults have been charged so far following the violence which broke out in parts of the country after three young girls were murdered in Southport on July 29.

Some 79 of them have already been sentenced for violent disorder among other offences.

X founder Elon Musk sparked huge backlash earlier this month after he fell victim to social media misinformation on his own platform relating to the unrest.

Mr Musk shared a fake story about Prime Minister Keir Starmer allegedly considering building detainment camps for rioters.

However, no such piece existed online and the businessman later deleted his post.

Prince Harry appeared to refer to the incident during his speech, saying: “What happens online within a matter of minutes transfers to the streets.

“People are acting on information that isn’t true. It comes down to all of us to be able to spot the true from the fake.

He added: “In an ideal world those with positions of influence would take more responsibility. We are no longer debating facts.

“For as long as people are allowed to spread lies, abuse, harass, then social cohesion as we know it has completely broken down.”
