Prince Harry and Meghan Markle give Archie and Lilibet a new surname | Royal | News

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to have given their two children a new surname, it has been reported.

The former working royals hit headlines after launching their website, sussex.com, earlier this year, and it now appears that Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, will use the surname of ‘Sussex’ as opposed to ‘Mountbatten-Windsor’.

As reported by the Mirror, Archie and Lilibet began using the surname after the King’s coronation last May.

The surname ‘Mountbatten-Windsor’ was decreed by the Privy Counsel – the official advisors to the late Queen Elizabeth II – in 1960. It was then expected to be applied to all male-line descendants of the late Queen and Prince Philip – which included Prince Harry.

Speaking of the Sussex website – and the name – a source told The Times: “The reality behind the new site is very simple — it’s a hub for the work the Sussexes do and it reflects the fact the family have, since the King’s coronation, the same surname for the first time.

“That’s a big deal for any family. It represents their unification and it’s a proud moment.”

Archie and Lilibet weren’t granted Prince and Princess – or HRH titles – at the time of their births due to not being grandchildren of the monarch. However, when Charles became King in September 2022, they became the grandchildren of a Monarch which changed their status.

In March 2023, when Lilibet was christened, it was revealed that the two children would be given Prince and Princess titles.

Archie was born in the UK in May 2019, however unlike her brother, Lilibet was born in America in June 2021. They now live with Harry and Meghan in California.
