The Prince and Princess of Wales attended a Ceremony to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day and the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27th at the Guildhall in London.

On arrival at the event, the Prince and Princess of Wales met survivors from the Holocaust to hear their personal stories, before attending the ceremony where the Prince gave a reading.

Afterwards, the Prince and Princess lit candles alongside young representatives from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and other partner organisations. The candles will act as a symbol to remember all those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and other genocides.

The event brought together faith and civic leaders as well as survivors of the Holocaust and more recent genocides. Holocaust Memorial Day is an internationally recognised date to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of people killed under Nazi persecution and those killed in subsequent genocides.

The Princess of Wales wore the late Queen’s Bahrain Pearl Earrings and a five-strand Pearl Necklace.

Royalty from around Europe joined Heads of State from around the World to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in Poland on January 27th. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest concentration and extermination camp during the Second World War.

Auschwitz-Birkenau, known as the largest concentration and extermination camp of Nazi Germany, was liberated by the Soviet army on January 27, 1945. Following a United Nations resolution, this date was declared International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005.

The annual commemoration is attended by former prisoners and Holocaust survivors. The ceremony also commemorates other victims of the Nazi period. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum organizes the commemoration.
