Pasties and a promise to return: the Duke of Cornwall enjoys the sunshine on the Scilly Isles

The Duke of Cornwall piled up the pasties on a visit to the Scilly Isles and promised those he met he’d be back with his family.

Important visit for Prince William

Prince William was visiting the islands officially for the first time as Duke of Cornwall although he and his wife have spent several breaks there privately with their children.

And it was George, Charlotte and Louis who were on William’s mind as he went out and about on St. Mary’s island. As he chatted to residents, he revealed that his three children had been keen to accompany him, saying ”The children are very jealous that I’m here.”

However, it appeared that there was at least one souvenir going back to Windsor for the three youngsters. The Duke of Cornwall picked up five Cornish pasties during a stop in a shop and told the owners that they weren’t all for him.

William talks about Catherine’s health

William also spoke of the Princess of Wales as he was asked about her health – Catherine is continuing to undergo preventative chemotherapy after cancer was detected by tests that followed major abdominal surgery in January. As he visited St. Mary’s Hospital, one of the senior staff, Tracy Smith, enquired about the health of the Princess with William replying ”she’s doing well”.

The Duke of Cornwall’s visit to the hospital provided an idea of how the small islands that make up the Scillies have to share vital resources. The facility serves all the islands and provides a wide range of care. It’s built on Duchy of Cornwall land and there are plans under way for an extension. Prince William told hospital staff to keep telling him what else they needed, adding ”I’m just trying to learn my way around and work out what needs doing.”

Prince interviewed by school children

The visit to St. Mary’s island also saw William meet local school children who asked him whether he could stay to lunch and what his favourite colour is – he went for blue as his final answer.

The Duke also visited the harbour on St. Mary’s to meet some of the local business owners who rely on the tourists arriving by boat for a large part of their income. The prince also chatted to members of the gig boat, Zelda, which took third place recently in the World Pilot Gig Championships.

The visit to the Scilly Isles followed Prince William’s day in Newquay in Cornwall where he saw work on housing projects overseen by the Duchy of Cornwall and met members of the RNLI.
