The Danish Royal Family hosted their first cousin, King Olav V, and Princess Astrid of Norway on their State Visit to Denmark on this day in 1958, 65 years ago, which was the first State Visit of King Olav’s Reign. The Danish and Norwegian Royal Families have had a very close relationship for over a century, ever since Prince Carl of Denmark, the father of King Olav, was elected King Haakon VII of Norway in 1905!

King Frederik IX, Queen Ingrid and Crown Princess Margrethe of Denmark welcomed their first cousin, King Olav V of Norway and Princess Astrid in Copenhagen Harbour as they arrived on the Royal Yacht Norge, followed by a Procession and an Appearance on the Balcony of Amalienborg Palace.

In the evening, King Frederik and Queen Ingrid (wearing the Danish Emerald Parure) hosted a State Banquet for King Olav at Christiansborg Palace, at which they were joined by Princess Astrid (wearing the Norwegian Emerald Parure) and Crown Princess Margrethe (in the Alexandrine Drop Tiara).

Also present at the State Banquet were Hereditary Prince Knud and Hereditary Princess Caroline-Mathilde (wearing Queen Alexandrine’s Fringe Tiara), Princess Margaretha (in her Diamond Floral Tiara), Princess Dagmar (wearing her Diamond Floral Tiara), and Princess Viggo (in her Diamond Scroll Tiara).

This State Visit in 1958 was followed by a Danish State Visit to Norway in 1960, the the Danish State Visit to Norway in 1973, and a Norwegian State Visit to Denmark in 1974, all in the Reign of King Olav.
