Fans of The Crown – clear your diaries, stock up on snacks and arm yourself with tissues because the final season of the award-winning show will be back to binge-watch in autumn 2023.

This information comes from Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria, who told The Wrap that the sixth and final season of the royal drama will premiere this coming autumn.

Viewers have been eagerly awaiting this next chapter of the historical drama as it will focus on the love story between Prince William, played by Ed McVey, and Kate Middleton, played by Meg Bellamy.

It will follow the pair as they meet while at university, with filming staying true to life having filmed at the St. Andrews campus.

Season six will also cover the tragic end of Princess Diana, who died in 1997 in Paris.

In addition to McVey and Bellamy as William and Kate, The Crown will see Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce return as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and Luther Ford as Prince Harry.

The Crown has been criticised heavily during its reign and before the release of the fifth season was forced to issue a disclaimer that read: “inspired by real events, this fictional dramatisation tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign”.

Earlier this year The Sun revealed scripts for The Crown had been rewritten after producers failed to get Gillian Anderson back for her role as PM Margaret Thatcher.

Despite their best efforts, the US actress was not for returning as Maggie, throwing the show into more chaos.

Anderson, 54, won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her series four role as Iron Lady Maggie, famous for her “lady is not for turning” speech in 1980.
