Today marks the 75th Anniversary of the Birth of the late Queen Aishwarya of Nepal, who was born on this day in 1949! The Aristocrat from the powerful Rana Family who became the beloved Queen and a style icon before being assassinated by her son in the Nepalese Royal Massacre, Queen Aishwarya frequently wore the Nepalese Diamond Tiara, but also possessed this FRED Emerald Tiara!

The magnificent Diamond and Emerald Tiara was made by FRED at the commission of King Mahendra and Queen Ratna in 1960, using emeralds provided by the King and Queen, as relayed by Vincent Meylan:

The style of the tiara is very interesting as it is inspired by the central golden motive of the Nepalese throne. The throne itself takes it’s inspiration in the naga motive ( the god snake) who is a very ancient divinity predating Buddhism or Hinduism. In any case it was adopted as a powerful fertility symbol by both religions and seen as a protector of both lord Budha and lord Krishna.

Queen Ratna notably wore her Emerald Tiara for a magnificent State Banquet hosted by the Dutch Royal Family at the Royal Palace of Amsterdam during the Nepal State Visit to The Netherlands in 1967.

Queen Aishwarya notably wore the FRED Emerald Tiara during the Nepalese State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Madrid in 1983.

Two years later, the FRED Emerald Tiara was worn by Queen Aishwarya with a magnificent Emerald Necklace for a Return Dinner hosted by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh during the British State Visit to Nepal in 1986.

Queen Aishwarya also wore the FRED Emerald Tiara for an Investiture Ceremony at the Narayanhiti Palace in Katmandu, shortly before the Royal Family’s tragic massacre by the Crown Prince.

Unlike the Nepalese Diamond Tiara, the FRED Emerald Tiara was worn by Queen Komal, most notably for an Investiture Ceremony during King Gyanendras brief reign. While the Diamond Tiara is now on display at the Narayanhiti Palace in Katmandu following the fall of the Monarchy, it appears the Emerald Tiara remains in the possession of Queen Komal.
