I enjoyed the full account of the life of the singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett (Obituary, 4 September) and certainly hadn’t registered the extent of his accomplishment as a businessman. The particular success of his song Margaritaville remains a mystery to me, however. It seems, at best, an unexceptionable sub-Eagles ditty. Far better, if only for its title, is My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink and I Don’t Love Jesus.

So Lin Friend and her husband have “two Oxford degrees between them” (presumably one each?) but were unable to successfully renew their senior railcards (Letters, 7 September)? What chance then do people with polytechnic degrees, or even Russell Group degrees, have when it comes come to renewing their railcards? I’m not even going to try!
