The Swedish Royal Family held a glittering Gala at the Royal Palace of Stockholm on this day in 2000, 25 years ago, to herald in the new Millennium.
King Carl XVI Gustaf gave a Speech outside the Royal Palace of Stockholm:
“Dear Swedes,
In a short while we will be entering a new millennium. Although the turn of the millennium itself is more a matter of word magic than some strange event, it is celebrated all around our earth. We are all filled with hope, curiosity and a certain measure of the beaver for the new, which awaits us when we step over the threshold of time to the twenty-hundreds”.
We all want that the next year to bring us peace, that all people to experience freedom and be able to feel safe. We hope for clean water and fresh air, something that we here in our beautiful Sweden take for granted, but which is remote in so many other places.
The new leaf in the book of time, which the turn of the millennium gives us, seems large and blank. Then on the first page of the chapter called Twentieth Century, let’s write basic values about peace and democracy. We must never give in to violence, terror and oppression. Our long tradition of humanity and solidarity, which has won great respect around the world, is something to cherish in the future as well”.
