The Princess of Wales showed up for classes at Nottingham Trent University on Wednesday to carry out more engagements concerning World Mental Health Day.

Catherine arrived at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus mid-day to hear how the university and the University of Nottingham support their students’ mental health.

The royal met with students who work in mental health peer-to-peer support programs and took part in wellness activities to get a taste of what programs the universities offer. The two partner together on a program called ‘Universities for Nottingham’ to endorse positive collaborations.

One wellness activity Catherine participated in was the ‘Step In Circle,’ which encourages students to share their personal experiences to build confidence and take care of their well-being.

During the session, Catherine revealed how her own university experience at the University of St. Andrews encouraged her passion for photography.

The royal said, “I remember university for me was one of those great opportunities to try out new hobbies and that has carried through now.

“I also tried out the photography club at university, which was great, and I met totally new friends, and that’s something I continue to love and enjoy now.”

She added that university also encouraged her to try sports clubs and arts and revealed that she’s carrying on this attitude with her own children, saying, “It’s one of the things with my kids too, just trying out new things, and university for me was when I learned to try out because there is so much on offer.”

Catherine also viewed the research facilities that measure student behaviour to determine which students may need more support and met with extra-curricular groups to learn how their hobbies are helping them with their mental health.

The knitting group then presented Catherine with a gift for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis: knitted jumpers with their initials on them.

In a statement on Nottingham Trent University’s website, Professor Sharon Huttly, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Development and Performance, said that they were honoured to welcome Catherine and that they “were proud to demonstrate how NTU supports students with their mental health by focusing on participation and helping them to develop a sense of belonging and connectivity to their community.”

The university’s Student Union President, Anna O’Hara, added: “Going to university is a big life change, for some, it is the first time living away from home. A welcoming community is extremely important to all students and we know how extra-curricular activities from knitting to sports give us a sense of belonging.

“We were pleased to be able to show Her Royal Highness some of the well-being activities that take place at NTU and speak to some of our students about their experiences.”

The University of Nottingham’s Union Development Officer, Jessica Nuttall, said: “It was so good seeing the importance of looking after your mental health being asked for from such a significant place and figure, and highlighting how important it is for students.”

Kensington Royal shared a video of Catherine’s visit with the caption: “A great morning seeing how @nottinghamtrentuni and @uniofnottingham are working together to build a stronger, more connected community which supports the mental well-being of all students and ensures everyone feels at home.”
