Meghan Markle’s telling 3-word statement when she met Princess Kate | Royal | News

Meghan Markle and Princess Kate are not believed to be on talking terms anymore, however the sister-in-laws did once reportedly get on well. During their few public sightings together, from the Sandringham Christmas walkabout to Wimbledon, Kate, 43, and Meghan, 43, always appeared to be smiling and laughing.

In Meghan and Prince Harry’s engagement interview in 2017, the Duchess of Sussex shared a sweet three-word statement about Kate. When asked in the BBC interview about how Prince William and Princess Kate had been on meeting Meghan, the duchess said: “She’s (Kate) been wonderful.”

Harry then said: “Amazing, as has William as well, you know, fantastic support.”

However, since Meghan and her husband Prince Harry, 40, quit royal life in 2020, they have painted a very different picture which completely contradicts this.

In the Netflix docuseries Harry and Meghan, which was released in 2022, the duchess said spoke about the first time she met Kate, and made a comment that suggested the meeting was not as warm as Meghan once made it out to be.

She said: “I met her [Kate] for the first time, I think we went for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and barefoot. I was a hugger, I’ve always been a hugger, I didn’t realise that that was jarring for a lot of Brits.

“I started to understand that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside, that there is a forward facing way of being, and then you close the door, [sighs], I can relax now. But that formality carries over on both sides and that was surprising to me.”

Meghan also made claims that Kate had previously made her cry in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. The duchess said that the two women had a row over bridesmaid dresses. Meghan told Oprah: “A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining to … flower girl dresses. And it made me cry.

“And it really hurt my feelings, and I thought in the context of everything else that was going on in those days leading to the wedding, it didn’t make sense to not be just doing whatever everyone else is doing, which was trying to be supportive knowing what was going on with my dad and whatnot.”

The duchess said that the princess apologised to her and brought her flowers.

It is believed the two women have not been on talking terms since the release of Harry’s memoir Spare in 2023, with their relationship having been fractured when Meghan and Harry quit royal life in 2020.
