Meghan Markle released the final episode of her Confessions of a Female Founder podcast on Tuesday morning and was joined by SPANX founder Sara Blakely. While the Duchess spoke about “betting on yourself and building bold business strategies,” she also made a veiled royal dig.
When speaking about coming up with names for a business, the Duchess said: “If you have an idea about what you are going to name that baby, you keep it so close to your heart, until that baby is born and it’s named. Don’t ask anyone’s opinion.”
Her comments are particularly interesting after contradicting stories around her daughter Princess Lilibet’s name whipped up a huge furore.
Prince Harry and Meghan claimed that they had been granted permission from Queen Elizabeth II to use her family pet name for their daughter; however, different stories soon emerged.
In Robert Hardman’s biography, Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story, one member of staff had said that the late Queen was “as angry as I’d ever seen her” after hearing that Meghan and Harry had alleged that they’d been given her permission to use the name ‘Lilibet’.
At the time of Lilibet’s birth, the BBC reported that, contrary to what Harry and Meghan had said, the Queen was not asked for her blessing to use the name.
Other reports claimed that, while the Queen was contacted by her grandson, she was not in the position to say no.
However, a spokesperson for Meghan and Harry later hit back at these claims and said that they would not have used the name for their daughter if the late Queen had not been “supportive”.
The spokesperson said at the time: “The Duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement – in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.
“During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”
