Meghan Markle is looking ahead, focusing on her future and family with Prince Harry. The Duchess of Sussex, 42, has “moved on” from the Royal family, while Harry “still has unfinished business,” according to author Omid Scobie.
Scobie, who’s written a new book called Endgame, told PEOPLE: “Quite early on in the [book-writing] process, some of those Meghan sources that I really leant on in the earlier years this time were like, ‘You know what? She doesn’t want anything to do with it,'”.
He added: “For Harry it’s different. He still has unfinished business when it comes to his battles with the press.
“His challenge will be to find something that balances that out so we can see him working in a space that isn’t connected to the ties that bind from the past.”

Despite their distance from the royals, Meghan and Harry have maintained contact with King Charles. They even wished him a happy birthday recently.
Scobie revealed: “With Harry, there’s a reluctant acceptance that this is just who his father is. He would rather have that in his life than to cut it off completely. Hence, when they talk it is often [Harry] reaching out,” He also mentioned that Meghan sends photos of their children to Charles, showing a willingness to keep some connection.
In May, Prince Harry made a fleeting appearance at the coronation of his father, King Charles and Queen Camilla. However, he wasn’t invited to join the rest of the Royal family on the palace balcony. His wife Meghan and their two children, four year old Archie and two year old Lilibet, stayed home celebrating Archie’s birthday.
Author Scobie, in his book ‘Endgame’, details both the breakdown of the Royal family and the weakening of the modern monarchy. According to him, Prince William has moved so far ahead that his priorities now are very different from what they were a decade ago.
Scobie suggests that palace staff consider any comments from Harry and Meghan, particularly Harry, as mere irritating noise. He adds that the feelings of this man don’t hold any value anymore, which is typical of any large corporation. Despite being a family, their definition of family seems to be quite different.
The Royal family isn’t known for its focus on emotions. But Scobie warns in ‘Endgame’ that the family is ignoring its internal issues at its own risk. He believes that part of the public’s support comes from viewing the Royal family as the nation’s family.
Scobie suggests that William, who is next in line for the throne, has chosen his loyalty to the monarchy over his brother, even allegedly working with the UK press to undermine Harry. Kensington Palace didn’t comment on these claims when approached by PEOPLE.
Almost a year after Harry revealed the deep rift within his family in his memoir ‘Spare’, Scobie says “absolutely nothing has changed,”.
The resentment between William and Harry, the future King and the Duke of Sussex respectively, has now turned into something colder and more unyielding, according to Scobie: indifference.
Scobie believes that Harry’s publication of ‘Spare’ was his final attempt to express his feelings to his family. He said, “Because clearly there’s never been an open enough forum to have these conversations or share these feelings.”
