King Philippe of the Belgians has welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when the pair met in Brussels. 

The Belgian king received the Ukrainian President at the Royal Palace in Brussels, less than a week after the clash in the White House with US President Donald Trump. President Zelenskyy was in Brussels to attend the emergency EU summit on Ukraine. 

The King of the Belgians and the President of Ukraine spoke in English. King Philippe praised President Zelenskyy for his dedication and poise, saying “We in Belgium are very impressed by this and we are at your side and we are going to help you together with our other colleagues of Europe… the dignity you have”.

Earlier, President Zelensky met Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and Defence Minister Theo Francken. 

King Philippe is not the first royal to meet with the President of Ukraine in the past week following the contentious meeting with US President Donald Trump’s in the White House.

King Charles welcomed President Zelenskyy to Sandringham Estate for a private audience less than 48 hours after the clash. The two were seen on the arrival of the Ukrainian president and were later photographed together in the Saloon at Sandringham before their private meeting took place.
