King Felipe VI of Spain was on an Official Visit to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan at the invitation of King Abdullah II of Jordan this weekend, after the originally scheduled State Visit with Queen Letizia was downgraded due to the serious political situation in the Middle East.

Upon arrival in Jordan, King Felipe was received by Prince Faisal bin Al Hussein of Jordan at the Royal Pavilion of Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, where there was a Guard of Honour.

King Felipe hosted a Reception for 300 members of the Spanish community at the Spanish Embassy in Jordan, which included Princess Miriam al-Ghazi of Jordan, Dowager Princess of Turnovo.

The King said

Good afternoon everyone, Ma sa al jeir,

In all my trips abroad, meeting with the community is one of the most emotional moments. Both the Queen – who, on this occasion, due to the special circumstances of the visit, was unable to come – and I like and are interested in getting to know the Spaniards who are far from Spain, your stories and your families, because, far from losing the link with your country, you often live it more intensely and, furthermore, you pass it on to your children.

In today’s meeting, the feeling is even greater because of the difficult situation that the region is going through. I would like to convey to you, in this time of great concern for everyone, the embrace and closeness of your compatriots.

So I reiterate, dear compatriots, my excitement at being able to be close to you, to learn first-hand about your history, your concerns and your hopes. I wish you every success in life and in your work and I ask you, at this time, to help us bear witness to the fervent desire for peace and stability in the region that we Spaniards and Jordanians share.

Thank you so much.

The following day, King Felipe visited Baqa’a, the refugee camp of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), alongside Prince Faisal bin Al Hussein.

In the afternoon, King Felipe had an Audience with King Abdullah II of Jordan and Crown Prince Hussein at the Al Hussainiya Palace, ahead of a meeting with delegations from the two countries, with the King saying:

Spain and Jordan are united by a shared desire for peace and a common vision of prosperity for the region.

King Abdullah II and King Felipe VI also attended an event marking the launch of a collaboration and cooperation framework between the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority and the Board of Directors of the Alhambra Palace and Generalife in Spain.

At the end of the visit, King Felipe seen off by Prince Faisal bin Al Hussein of Jordan from the Royal Pavilion of Queen Alia International Airport in Amman.

The Spanish and Jordanian Royal Families have had a long and close history over the past several decades, with King Abdullah II and Queen Rania making their first State Visit to Spain 25 years ago this month.
