King Charles wants to celebrate his Coronation with £280,000 winner at the races on the same day

KING CHARLES will take some time out from his duties on Coronation day to see if his horse has won him £280,000.

Slipofthepen looks set to be a Royal runner in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket next Saturday, May 6.

The star-studded race is the first of five Classics on the Flat and worth an absolute fortune to the winner.

Slipofthepen, a three-year-old colt trained by John Gosden, is currently around 20-1 to triumph.

But the vibes are good about his chances following a highly promising racecourse gallop at racing HQ Newmarket on Thursday.

And the Royals have history in the race, with the late Queen winning the contest in 1958 with her horse Pall Mall.

The links don’t end there, with Queen Elizabeth II the breeder of the hugely exciting Slipofthepen.

King Charles’ racing adviser John Warren said the monarch and Camilla, who is aiding him in his running of the Royal racing empire, will find time later in the day to watch a replay of the 2000 Guineas.

He said: “As far as the owners are concerned they won’t be able to think of anything else but the Coronation, but they would never prevent the horse participating if we recommended that is where he ought to go.

“It would be an added bonus and they would watch after the event.

“The King has had very good osmosis in tuning in to the bloodstock side of The Queen’s life.

“He has always said when he had the responsibility of taking the bloodstock portfolio on he would take it seriously and he has, wonderfully supported by the Queen Consort at the same time.

“It is a wonderful thing for racing they have both taken such an interest.”

Frankie Dettori is under consideration to ride Slipofthepen – although a mount for James Doyle, who won last year’s 1000 and 2000 Guineas, looks more likely at the moment.

Legendary trainer Gosden said: “It depends. Frankie at the moment obviously has Chaldean, the Dewhurst winner, so we’ll just have to see.

“Depending on what else runs, James may well be available. There are decisions to be made.”
