King Charles has joined by Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, and Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, for a rare joint engagement between Monarch and politicians. And the decision has raised a debate about whether the event was too political for The King to take on.
The King, the Prime Minister and the Deputy PM visited Nansledan, near Newquay. The develeopment was initiated in 2014 and features housing, a school, businesses, and community organisations.
While Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall, Charles sought out to “create a new community for people, local businesses and the planet”.
King Charles, the Prime Minister and Deputy PM began their day by visiting Newquay Orchard. The three-acre apple orchard not only grew almost seven tonnes of food for the community in 2024, it also provides space for community and art events, as well as opportunities for adult education.
His Majesty was happy to speak to volunteers working in the gardens, a keen gardener himself.
The King also returned to Nansledan School, a building that was both designed and built by the Duchy of Cornwall. He officially opened the school in March 2020 and upon his return was able to meet with more students and see their learning spaces.
The three were met with happy crowds upon their arrival, with community members lining the streets and even waiting for a wave from their windows.
The appearance of the Monarch with the two most important members of the government has led to debate about whether the move was too political as The King usually stays out of political events. Commentators said it was hard to recall the last time a Monarch had headed out on an issue based engagement like this one with the Prime Minister and Deputy PM.
