Mr Southgate resigned as England manager on Tuesday after leading the squad for eight years. Bidding farewell to the team, the former manager said it had been the “honour of my life to play for England and to manage England”.

In the run-up to the final, King Charles had shown a keen interest in England’s success at the Euros.

After securing a spot in the final with a 2-1 victory against the Dutch football team, the monarch issued a hilarious statement reading: “My wife and I join all our family in wishing you the warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A. European Championship – and in sending our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.”

Before wishing England “good luck”, the King added: “If I may encourage you to secure victory before the need for any last minute wonder-goals or another penalties drama, I am sure the stresses on the nation’s collective heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly alleviated!”

Following the final won by Spain, the monarch issued another statement addressed to Mr Southgate, reading: “Although victory may have eluded you this evening, nevertheless my wife and I join all my family in urging you and your support team to hold your heads high”.

While King Charles may have watched the match from his residence, Prince George and Prince William travelled to Germany to watch the match live.
