King Charles III and Queen Camilla to visit Canada

It has been announced that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit Canada on May 26th and 27th, where the King will preside over the State Opening of Canadian Parliament in Ottawa. This will be the King and Queen’s first visit to Canada as Sovereigns, and their first since 2022.

King Charles III will have an audience with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney among a series of engagements on the two-day visit.

The King and Queen will visit Canada from Monday 26th to Tuesday 27th May.

Their Majesties will attend The State Opening of the Parliament of Canada in Ottawa.

King Charles will be the first Canadian Monarch to preside over the State Opening of the Parliament since 1977, with previous Openings in 1939, 1957, and 1967.

Her Majesty personally opened the Canadian Parliament twice during her reign as Queen of Canada. The thrones the Queen and Duke sat on were commissioned in 1878 for the incoming Governor General, Marquess of Lorne, and his wife Princess Louise, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, whose arms are shown on the Duke’s throne, regularly occupied by the viceregal consort.

On a ribbon around his neck, King Charles wore the insignia of the Order of Canada, which he received as Prince of Wales from then-Governor General David Johnston in 2017. On the left breast of his jacket, The King is also wearing a bar of medals from Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Queen Camilla is wearing the Queen Mother’s Maple Leaf Brooch.

Made of platinum and studded with diamonds, it was first presented in 1939 by King George VI as a gift to his wife Queen Elizabeth (later known as the Queen Mother), on the occasion of her first Royal Tour of Canada. The brooch has since been worn by several female members of the Royal Family during events related to Canada and was a favourite of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Britain’s King Charles III gave a warm welcome to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday as the two met for a private audience at the monarch’s royal residence Sandringham.

While royal officials did not provide details about the private talks, the pair were expected to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to make Canada the 51st state.

Trudeau said on Sunday that he will discuss matters of importance to Canadians with Charles, who is the head of state in Canada, a member of the British Commonwealth of former colonies. Trudeau said “nothing seems more important to Canadians right now than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation.”
