While he was not able to attend in person His Majesty King Charles III focused on the “selfless duty” of healthcare workers as he sent a letter to the Who Cares Wins Awards,

The awards were run by for The Sun newspaper. His Majesty sent a letter congratulating the winners of this year’s Christina Newbury Award. The award is named in honour of The Sun’s late health editor, Christina Newbury who died suddenly in 2018. She was instrumental in setting up the annual awards. In the letter, he also praised the workers who arrived on the HMT Windrush 75 years ago to work in health service.

“It was those first volunteers who left their homes and families to cross the world that made the creation of the NHS possible.  It is the commitment of all who followed in their footsteps that has helped sustain it for 75 years. And today it is the boundless compassion, professionalism and good humour so exemplified by the Windrush Generation – now joined by that of NHS colleagues from over 200 nations – that continue to support patients and their families at their time of greatest need and anxiety.”

The Deputy Chair of the Windrush Commemoration Committee in the UK, Paulette Simpson CBE accepted the award. She said she was “honoured and delighted” to receive the award in Newbury’s honour. Simpson was joined on stage by three generations of the Bateman family. The family have all dedicated their careers to the NHS.

The awards honour and recognise those who have gone to great lengths in the healthcare field. There are 10 different award categories and nominees are submitted by people who feel they know someone deserving of the honour.
