King Charles and Queen Camilla to make first visit to Canada of new reign for a very important reason

King Charles and Queen Camilla are to make their first visit to Canada since the start of the new reign and there’s a very important reason why.

Their Majesties will visit be in Canada at the end of May and Charles III will officially open parliament during his trip.

The King will give the Speech from the Throne – it follows the election of a new government following a snap poll in April.

The Prime Minister-elect of Canada, Mark Carney, has invited King Charles to give the Speech from the Throne on 27 May in Ottawa, and The King has accepted.

Mark Carney’s Liberal minority government was elected on 28 April following a general election that came just weeks after a change at the top of the governing party. Mark Carney took over from Justin Trudeau after an internal party election – he was formerly the Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Governor of the Bank of England – but didn’t hold a parliamentary seat until this latest poll.

Mark Carney’s platform largely countered US President Donald Trump’s calls to make Canada the “51st state”.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will be in Canada on 26 May and 27 May.

This is their first visit to Canada since becoming King and Queen. They last visited in 2022. The full details of the visit will be announced later.

The last time that the Monarch attended the Opening of Parliament in Canada was in 1977 when Queen Elizabeth II opened parliament during her Silver Jubilee year.
