Nearly a year on from their coronation, Buckingham Palace has announced that a review of the patronages held by the late Queen Elizabeth II has been carried out and divvied up between King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other members of the British Royal Family.

According to the Palace, over 1,000 organisations and charities were reviewed—those with ties to Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles and Queen Camilla—to determine which should be maintained.

At the time of her death, Queen Elizabeth II held 492 patronages. Of these, 376 patronages will be retained. King Charles held 441 patronages as Prince of Wales, and 367 will be retained. Queen Camilla held 100 patronages as Duchess of Cornwall, and 91 will be retained.

In the first announcement, King Charles and Queen Camilla revealed that they will take over charities once held by Queen Elizabeth II.

King Charles will take over the patronages of the Royal British Legion, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Braemar Royal Highland Society, Camerata Ireland, Dogs Trust, and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

Among the patronages initially announced as being retained by King Charles were the Commonwealth Forestry Association, the Heritage Crafts Association, Samaritans, WaterAid, the Welsh National Opera, The Wildlife Trusts, and the Youth United Foundation.

Queen Camilla will take over the patronages of the Army Benevolent Fund, the Royal Academy of Dance, the Royal Literary Fund, the Royal Voluntary Service, and the Sandringham Women’s Institute.

The royal couple will become joint patrons of The Jockey Club.

The Palace shared that in the coming weeks, organisations will be notified of their royal patronage statuses and who will take over the patronages—if they aren’t being retained by King Charles or Queen Camilla.

A separate review will be carried out for patronages held in the 14 Commonwealth Realms to see which will be retained.
