The King and Queen went to see how Britain’s Royal Marines are training their Kenyan equivalents to take the fight against Islamist terrorists today.

They went to Kenya’s second city, Mombasa, on the Indian Ocean to witness a demonstration of a covert beach landing by Kenya Marines.

In 29C heat and 76 percent humidity, the royal couple watched the demonstration at Mtongwe Naval Base after flying down from Nairobi this morning and taking the Admiral’s Barge from the island city of Mombasa across to the training ground on the mainland in the suburbs.

King Charles, who is Captain General of the Royal Marines, and Queen Camilla were welcomed to the base by Kenya’s President William Ruto and his wife Rachel, the First Lady.

Camilla, 76, who often struggles in the heat, tried to keep cool in an Anna Valentine pink chiffon tunic and white palazzo trousers.

Charles, 74, who was wearing his Royal Marines tie, stood on a dias to take the salute from a guard of honour.

The Royal Marines, who are the Royal Navy’s own amphibious troops and the UK’s commando force, are training the Kenyans under a five-year strategic partnership between the two nations.

Britain’s Foreign Office currently advises against all but essential travel to large parts of north-east Kenya because of the risk of Islamist attacks and kidnappings.
