The former Belgian monarch, Albert II, is to stay in hospital longer than first expected after being admitted with dehydration.

The king, who is 89, was admitted early on the morning of June 27th 2023 after his health gave cause for concern.

Belgium’s Royal Palace initially said he would remain in hospital for a couple of days. However, on June 28th 2023, a short statement confirmed Albert will remain as an inpatient until the early part of next week, a potential stay of seven days in total.

The statement said the king was recovering well and there was no cause for concern.

Albert’s son and successor, King Philippe, has already visited his father twice. He cancelled an engagement as soon as the hospitalisation occurred to be with Albert.

Philippe’s mother, Queen Paola, has also been at her husband’s bedside.

Albert II ruled Belgium between 1993 and 2013 before stepping down in favour of King Philippe. During his reign he was hailed for his political abilities but drew criticism over his personal life. After abdicating, he admitted fathering an illegitimate daughter after he had married Paola.
