Princess Kate has made a rare public address in Birmingham to mark World Mental Health Day in which she stated she was “inspired” by young people, but added they must be aware of the “bigger picture” when it comes to good mental health.

Kate and Prince William were in the city today for an engagement in partnership with BBC Radio 1 and charity organisation The Mix, hosting a public forum for young people about ‘Exploring our Emotional Worlds’.

The Princess acknowledged in her speech how important it is for people to take care of their mental health in a fast-changing world and underlined their commitment to build a safer and fairer world for the benefit of society.

She said: “William and I continue to be inspired to see young people, like you all here today, leading this charge – being particularly brave in having some of those conversations yourselves.

“As a generation, you value and talk more about your mental health than any before you – something we truly admire and applaud.

Kate’s speech also drew attention to a “world…that is changing so fast, where social media and concerns about the threat of conflict, pandemics, climate change or the cost of living, can impact our emotional wellbeing and future hopes dramatically”.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have been known for their mental health advocacy over the years, having established their Heads Together campaign in 2016.

Their aim is to ensure people can improve their wellbeing and mental state by learning to understand and manage their varying emotions.

The event today, named ‘Exploring our Emotional Worlds’, focuses on how understanding our own emotions and building positive relationships can serve as a solid foundation of our mental wellbeing.

At the forum around 100 young people, representing 10 mental health and youth engagement charities in the country, shared their stories about the mental health challenges their generation faces.

For the occasion the Princess of Wales donned a fitted bright yellow blazer by L.K. Bennett which retails at £359, with a black top underneath and black trousers.
