The Belgian Royal Family hosted Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan on their Official Visit to Belgium on this day in 1993, 30 years ago, on their massive Tour of Europe just weeks after their visit to Belgium for the Funeral of King Baudouin of Belgium. The previous Japanese State Visit to Belgium was in 1971 while the next Belgian State Visit to Japan was in 1996, with the latest Belgian State Visit to Japan in 2016.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko were welcomed by King Albert II and Queen Paola as well as Queen Fabiola at the Royal Palace of Brussels on the first State Visit of the new Reign.

In the evening, King Albert II and Queen Paola (wearing her Diamond Necklace) hosted a Gala Dinner for Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan at the Royal Palace of Brussels.

The Duke of Brabant joined the Emperor and Empress for several engagement, and later, King Albert II, Queen Paola and Queen Fabiola hosted Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko with Princess Sayako at the Château Royal de Ciergnon.
