Iranian State Visit to Denmark, 1959


Following his State Visit to the United Kingdom, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark hosted Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran on his State Visit to Denmark on this day in 1959, 65 years ago, ahead of his State Visit to The Netherlands. The visit was reciprocated by the Danish State Visit to Iran in 1963, and attendance at festivities marking the 2500th Anniversary of the Persian Empire.

King Frederik IX, Queen Ingrid, and Crown Princess Margrethe received the Shah of Iran in an Official Welcome Ceremony in Copenhagen, before he was received at Fredensborg Palace.   

In the evening, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid (wearing the Danish Emerald Parure) hosted a State Banquet in honour of the Shah (in the Order of the Elephant) at Christiansborg Palace.

The Banquet was also attended by Crown Princess Margrethe (in the Alexandrine Drop Tiara), Princess Benedikte, Hereditary Prince Knud, Princess Elisabeth (in Queen Alexandrine’s Diamond Bandeau), Prince Axel of Denmark and Princess Margretha of Sweden and Denmark (in the Khedive of Egypt Tiara), Count Flemming and Countess Ruth (n Princess Ingeborg’s Diamond Tiara), Princess Margretha of Denmark and Bourbon-Parma (wearing the Floral Tiara),  Princess Viggo (in the Diamond Scroll Tiara), Princess Dagmar (in the Diamond Floral Tiara), and Countess Anne Helene Dorrit of Rosenborg (wearing Queen Désirée’s Ears of Wheat Tiara).

The following evening, King Frederik and Queen Ingrid (wearing the Pearl Poiré Tiara) joined the Shah for a Gala Performance at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, followed by a Return that was hosted by the Shah.

Also present were Crown Princess Margrethe (wearing the Alexandrine Drop Tiara), Princess Benedikte, Hereditary Prince Knud, Princess Elisabeth (in Queen Alexandrine’s Diamond Bandeau), Prince Axel of Denmark and Princess Margretha of Sweden and Denmark (wearing the Khedive of Egypt Tiara), Count Flemming and Countess Ruth (in Princess Ingeborg’s Diamond Tiara), Princess Margretha of Denmark and Bourbon-Parma (wearing the Floral Tiara), Princess Viggo (in the Garnet Kokoshnik Tiara), Princess Dagmar (in the Diamond Floral Tiara), and Countess Anne Helene Dorrit of Rosenborg (wearing Queen Désirée’s Ears of Wheat Tiara).
