A LIFE in the spotlight is par for the course for most members of the Royal Family.
But there is a set of direct descendants of the Queen who manage to move largely under the radar.
The grandchildren of the late monarch’s sister, Princess Margaret, prefer a quieter life and have managed to forge successful careers away from the glare of public scrutiny.
While Margaret was known for her big personality and love of the limelight, she preferred to keep the lives of her children – David Armstrong-Jones, 2nd Earl of Snowdon, and Lady Sarah Chatto – as normal as possible.
She once said: “My children aren’t royal, they just happen to have the Queen as an aunt.”
That ethos appears to have trickled down to her grandchildren – Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones, Arthur Robert Nathaniel Chatto, Samuel Chatto and Charles Armstrong-Jones.
Here we take a look at how the foursome live their lives without the pressures of royal responsibilities.
Samuel Chatto
Samuel Chatto, 26, is the son of Lady Sarah and Daniel Chatto.
He has an open Instagram account and has shared candid snaps over the years, including from his time at uni.
He appears to have inherited his grandmother’s love for the arts; after graduating from Eton he studied for a degree in History of Art at Edinburgh University.
He is now a craftsman and has even set up his own ceramics studio which he’s shared snaps from to social media.
In 2019, he told the Daily Mail that he was “completely uninspired” after a three-month stint in the commercial art market and decided to quit after visiting North Shore Pottery.
Bohemian Samuel has also toyed with other career paths like training to become a yoga instructor in India with his vegan girlfriend at the time, Sophie Pipe.
He is now dating Eleanor Ekserdjan, who also went to Edinburgh uni, and the pair were seen enjoying a night out at Tatler’s Little Black Book bash last year.
He shares a close bond with his younger brother Arthur and once posted a picture of them with a touching caption that read: “I love you bro (and I’m not just saying that cos you’re so big you could squish me).”
Arthur Chatto
Lady Sarah’s younger son Arthur, 24, set hearts aflutter when he began sharing snaps of his topless toned torso to Instagram a few years back.
Fans swooned at his incredible physique – though he’s since taken down his account.
In between his geography degree studies at Edinburgh University Arthur worked as a fitness trainer at BoundFitness gym, with a specialty in “strength and endurance training with a military focus”.
But it’s bad news for the ladies, as Arthur is still dating his university girlfriend Lizzie Friend.
He attended Westminster Cathedral Choir School first, before following in his brother’s footsteps.
Like his second cousin Prince Harry, Arthur eventually opted for a career in the Armed Forces and now serves in the Royal Marines.
The Queen was reportedly “proud” of him being the first member of her family to become an officer.
In 2020, Arthur and three others completed a gruelling row around the country to raise money for The British Red Cross and Just One Ocean.
Arthur has had his fair share of royal duties – he served as a Page of Honour for Elizabeth II and had the task of carrying her gown at ceremonial events such as the Order of the British Empire in 2012.
Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones
Princess Margaret’s youngest and only grandchild, Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones, had a brush with fame when, aged eight, she served as a bridesmaid at Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011.
Now 21, Lady Margarita recently dipped her toe back into the limelight with a glamorous shoot for Tatler magazine which made the front page.
The daughter of David Armstrong-Jones and his ex-wife Serena has a keen interest in the fashion and beauty industry.
After completing prep school she studied photography, history of art and jewellery design for her A Levels at Tudor Hall school.
She then studied at Oxford Brookes and dabbled in photography and event management before moving for Paris to study jewellery and photography, where she flat-shares with pals.
Lady Margarita was recently spotted at Tatler’s Little Black Book bash in London looking stunning in a white faux fur coat and a mini dress, which some have suggested was a nod to her late grandmother, who she never met.
The outfit was custom made by Michael Kors and drew similarties to the pink sequin dress Princess Margaret wore under a fur coat to the premiere of Captain Horatio Hornblower in 1951.
Charles Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley
Charles, 23, is the Lady Margarita’s older brother and was made Viscount Linley following the death of his grandfather Anthony Armstrong-Jones.
His father inherited the title 2nd Earl of Snowdon.
Like Arthur, Charles was also made a Page of Honour to the Queen.
Charles now works as a musician after attending Eton College and studying design engineering at Loughborough University.
According to his sister, he is “very into his orchestral music. He is self-taught [and he] can sing, play the piano and the guitar”.
But don’t expect to see him rocking out at a concert as he pretty much likes to keep away from the spotlight.
