The 80th anniversary of D-Day is fast approaching. On 6 June 1944 over 100,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches at Normandy and would recapture the beach over the following days. The British Royal Family will be taking part in commemorations marking the anniversary.
Commemorations on the eve of D-Day
The King, Queen, and Prince of Wales will be in Portsmouth on Wednesday, 5 June for the UK’s national commemorative event.
The Princess Royal and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, will be in Normandy in her role as Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Regina Rifles to Second World War Canadian Royal Regina Rifleman. They will then attend a reception with the Regiment.
In the evening on June 5, The Princess Royal will attend an annual service of remembrance at Bayeux Cathedral in her role as President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Solemn ceremonies marking 80 years since D-Day
On Thursday, 6 June King Charles and Queen Camilla will attend a Royal British Legion commemorative event at the Ministry of Defence.
The Prince of Wales will be in France on June 6 where he will attend a Government of Canada commemorative ceremony at Juno Beach Centre. He will then join over 25 Heads of State from around the world at Omaha Beach for an international commemorative ceremony.
Poignant tributes from Royal Family
The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will attend D-Day 80: Remembering the Normandy Landings at the Royal Albert Hall on the evening of June 6.
Further tributes will comes from the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh who will be in Staffordshire to attend the Royal British Legion’s Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum.
