Queen Camilla proved she’s no stranger to the grill as she and The King flipped sausages, or snags, on a barbecue in a park for a taste of suburban life in Sydney. And there was only one royal winner in the flipping contest – enter the barbie Queen.
King Charles clicked the tongs in anticipation making sure the “top tucker” was cooked evenly. He even took over the vegetarian options as Camilla handled the beef bangers. Scott McCoy, a restaurant manager was looking after the barbecue and says it was an “honour” to have help from Their Majesties.

McCoy, known by his nickname, “Chop” runs BlackBear BBQ in Sydney. He said ”“They said the sausages were amazing, they didn’t try them but they could see. It’s amazing they’re here helping us to cook.”
The Queen was instructed to use the tongs “The Aussie Way” by clicking them twice before using them. In addition to the barbie, Murray Wilkinson from Mudgee brought a handful of 16,000 Merino sheep to demonstrate the art of working with sheepdogs. Murray also has 3,000 head of cattle.

He said “‘I am going to demonstrate to them how we work the dogs and will then get them to jump up on the sheep’s backs. It took me about three weeks to train Meg and about a year to train Colt. The girls do tend to pick it up quicker. It’s a great honour to have been asked. I did my apprenticeship for 14 years with the Packers and I know there is some crossover there.”
Their Majesties watched the demonstration but unfortunately, things went south as the sheep got confused by the large number of cameramen standing in the pen.
Their boss continued “It was a bit frustrating as the media moved which confused the sheep. He could have done it very quickly but it took him several attempts. The king still said he was impressed, though, and talked about how wonderful it was. He was saying how well the sheep looked and the price of wool.”

The barbecue came after Her Majesty visited the Green Square Library in Sydney. Camilla is known for being a long-term advocate of reading and literacy. She met with past participants of The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition and various Australian authors. She also joined students who have been taking part in a series of writing workshops across the Sydney community.
Their Majesties then left for Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting.
