How a glamourous royal just managed to wear two tiaras at the same time to one glittering event

The Grand Duchess of Luxembourg wore not one but two tiaras to a glittering event in what could prove to be the final time she hosts such a spectacular gala.

As the reign of her husband, Grand Duke Henri, enters its final months ahead of his planned abdication later this year. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa chose a pair of tiaras for the State Banquet the couple hosted for the Singaporean President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

But Maria Teresa had a clever way of making sure she could wear a pair of diadems without looking overdone. She turned one of them into a bracelet that sparkled through the State Banquet.

The gala evening, filled with ceremonial, came as President Tharman Shanmugaratnam began his two-day State Visit to Luxembourg. Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg hosted the President for a State Dinner at the Grand Ducal Palace at the end of day one.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa chose the Belgian Scroll Tiara, one that originally belonged to Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte, as her main jewel for the evening. The scroll-style platinum tiara has over 800 diamonds with an 8.1 carat diamond set in the centre. That diamond can be worn separately as a ring, while the central scroll element can also be worn separately as a ring.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa also wore the Oval Amethyst Tiara in one of its alternate settings, as a bracelet. The tiara features oval amethysts separated by two rows of seed pearls.

Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie wore the Chaumet Choker Tiara, another loved piece in the family. The lattice-style tiara is set with diamonds and topped with diamonds and pearls that can be swapped with other stones. For the State Banquet, the Hereditary Grand Duchess wore the pearl setting. This tiara can also be worn in a necklace setting as a choker.

This will be one of the last State Visits to be hosted by Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Mara Teresa. In October, Grand Duke Henri will abdicate and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume will take the throne.
