The Executive Director of the Canadian Royal Heritage Trust also pointed out results of a 2020 poll that showed favourable support for the Duke of Sussex. He said: “The overwhelming majority of Canadians supported the Sussexes’ plans at the time. In one poll in early 2020 over 60% wanted Prince Harry to become the next Governor General of Canada.”
It was thought at one point that Harry would take up an official role in the Commonwealth country, but that was soon scrapped once it was revealed the Sussexes had moved from Canada to Montecito, in California.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left Vancouver Island in Canada and moved to the US in March 2020. They settled in Los Angeles at Tyler Perry’s home before moving into the Montecito mansion they currently live in with their two children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.
Earlier this year, the couple visited Vancouver in Canada for the ‘One year to go’ event ahead of the Invictus Winter Games 2025, which will be the seventh edition of the sporting competition—and the first winter-weather version.
Harry even had a go at a number of events sports veterans will be competing in, including sit skit, skeleton, and wheelchair curling.
A well-placed source previously told Express.co.uk: “Meghan has a close bond with Canada as she used to live there while filming Suits.”
They added: “The original plan was for them to set up base there and Harry would take on some kind of semi-official role, but it didn’t work out so they moved to the United States.”
Prince Harry and Meghan are reportedly planning to take their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to a “family-focused” Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 opening ceremony in February next year.
Meanwhile, Prince William and Princess Kate were last in Canada together in 2016, the tour was significant as it was their first official visit with their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
During the tour, Prince William said: “Catherine and I are delighted to be back in Canada. When we were here last time, we had been married only three months. The warm welcome that you gave us at that important moment in our lives meant a lot to us – and we have never forgotten it.”
He added that he was thankful Prince George and Princess Charlotte could attend this visit, “beginning their own lifetime of friendship with this wonderful country.”
