Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in British history, and until her death in September 2022, she was only the monarch that the majority of the British population had known. However, the government has warned that her name will be closely controlled.

The Cabinet Office has released guidance that businesses, organisations, pubs, parks, and more will need to apply to use Queen Elizabeth II’s full name should they wish to rename in honour of the late sovereign. 

The government has warned that strict standards for applications will be enforced, and it should only be used in a “dignified and appropriate” manner. 

Approvals will largely be restricted to places that have a strong royal connection to the late Queen, and that “[r]equests that incorporate ‘memorial’ or ‘remembrance’ in a proposed name are likely to be looked upon favourably, where possible.”

With the one-year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s death approaching in September, the Cabinet Office is expecting a number of applications to be filed. A national memorial is also in the early stages of development.
