The final season of The Crown will be released in two parts later this year, Netflix has announced.

The first instalment of the historical TV drama’s sixth season will be released on 16 November with part two to follow on 14 December. The series, broadly based on historical events, depicts a fictionalised version of the British royal family.

Netflix announced the release date with a clip showing the actors who have played the Queen reflecting on the monarch’s role within the country.

After the past versions of the Queen, played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, speak about their duty, the current Queen, played by Imelda Staunton, walks up to a window where her figure stands as a silhouette in front of a crowd of cheering onlookers.

Season five of The Crown explored the events after the divorce of Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, including the BBC interview Diana had with the journalist Martin Bashir.

The final season will cover the 1997 Paris car accident that led to the death of Diana, the driver Henri Paul and Dodi Fayed, who was seen getting to know Diana in season five.

It is also expected to portray the premiership of Tony Blair, and the early relationship between Prince William and Kate Middleton.
